IP68 is a high protection level. If LED solar streetlight heads can be designed to this level, there would be no need to worry about any environment. Harsh conditions would not affect the normal operation of solar streetlights, and external issues would no longer be a concern. In fact, manufacturers of solar streetlights can design lighting fixtures to meet IP68 standards, but why don’t they do so?
LED solar streetlight heads generally have a protection level of IP65, which, while slightly lower in waterproof capability, fully meets outdoor environmental needs. The main reasons for not designing them to IP68 are considerations regarding heat dissipation and cost.
First, regarding heat dissipation, the design of streetlights involves air convection and aluminum thermal conduction. If an IP68 fully sealed design is adopted, air convection cannot be achieved. Additionally, if gel is used for waterproofing, it essentially acts as an insulation layer, making it difficult for heat to escape. As we all know, the heat dissipation of lighting fixtures is closely related to their lifespan. Adopting an IP68 design would undoubtedly lead to a significant reduction in lifespan. Achieving IP68 standards would also increase budgets for processes and materials, inevitably raising product prices. Since the more affordable IP65 standard meets needs completely, why opt for the more expensive IP68 heads? Extra configurations would only be a waste without any purchasing value.
IP68 high protection streetlight heads are expensive, have poor heat dissipation, short lifespans, and large sizes, which gives them no market competitiveness. Therefore, they are not designed to IP68. The current IP65 protection level is a good design.
