Solar street lights do not illuminate when it gets dark; what could be the reason? We have conducted thorough inquiries and provided the following response: if solar street lights have already been installed and have been functioning normally for a period of time, first check the reaction of the controller’s indicator lights. If neither light is on, it may indicate that the controller has been damaged. This can occur due to strong current surges such as direct lightning strikes or short circuits.
The solar street light’s battery panel charges the battery during the day. The discharge will continue only when the charging voltage reaches 24V (the controller’s default value). This setting is primarily aimed at preventing the battery from being deeply discharged for extended periods, which can lead to damage. In cases of under-voltage, if the solar street light controller is not restarted, battery voltages between 22.2V and 24V are considered under voltage. Discharge will only continue when the solar street light battery voltage exceeds 24V.
If the solar street light controller shows an under-voltage status and does not illuminate after dark, but the battery voltage exceeds the under-voltage threshold and indicates sufficient charge, the system remains operational at 24V. The under-voltage protection value is around 22.2V (the controller’s default value). Once the battery drops to this voltage point, the controller disconnects power to prevent over-discharging of the battery, ensuring continued usability of the entire device.
If at night, the solar street light controller shows normal discharge, and upon checking, the battery has sufficient voltage but the lights do not work, we recommend directly connecting the solar street light’s positive and negative terminals to the battery’s corresponding terminals for testing. If this test indicates that the system still does not discharge, it is likely that the light’s driver or rectifier has sustained damage; a professional meter should be used for further diagnostics.
