Those who have driven at night on the highway know that nighttime driving is often accompanied by darkness, making it seem like the only source of light are the car headlights. So, why aren’t streetlights installed on highways?
The reasons are as follows:
1. Safety
From a safety perspective, driving on the highway at night can lead to fatigue and drowsiness. The rhythmic pattern created by streetlights can inadvertently make drivers drowsier, leading to visual fatigue.
2. Cost
Let’s talk about the cost issue. For example, in the vicinity of the capital, Beijing, it would require approximately 100,000 to 300,000 streetlights for the surrounding highways. Not to mention the initial purchase and installation costs, the yearly electricity bill alone would be substantial.
Additionally, in our country, there are numerous highways with extensive networks. Installing streetlights on all highways would indeed incur high costs. Not every section of the highway experiences heavy traffic; some remote areas see very little vehicle movement at night. Installing lights on those sections with inherently low traffic would waste valuable electrical resources.
