Solar street lights commonly use high-pressure sodium lamps, low-pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps, and LED lights. Recently, the emergence of high-power LEDs and chip LEDs has gradually replaced traditional light sources.
Sodium lamp sources emit yellow light. They are gas discharge sources that emit light via mercury and sodium vapor, classified into low-pressure sodium lamps and high-pressure sodium lamps. Low-pressure sodium lamps were introduced earlier, with sodium vapor pressure not exceeding a few pascals. Their light spectrum is concentrated at 589nm, usually requiring the use of other light sources. They have a luminous efficiency of up to 200lm/W and a long lifespan (about 9000h). High-pressure sodium lamps operate at a standard sodium vapor pressure of about 10kPa, with a light spectrum that contains more red-orange light and less blue-green light. They are more commonly used due to their high luminous efficiency, high power, and long lifespan (about 12000h). However, since high-pressure sodium lamps are thermal sources with high surface temperatures and substantial heat output, they cannot be used for close-range lighting of crops.
Metal halide lamps emit white light. They are gas discharge sources that produce light through the arcing of mixed vapors of mercury and rare metal halides. Different light spectra can be produced by altering the composition of the metal halides. Their luminous efficiency is high, with a long lifespan of 5000h to 20000h. However, the fill material in these lamps contains mercury, which can cause environmental pollution when the used lamps are damaged or discarded. The spectrum contains a significant amount of far-red light and generates a lot of heat, making them unsuitable for close-range crop lighting.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) light sources are a new generation of energy-saving lights that have developed in recent years. The color of the light source can be adjusted according to customer needs, typically in the color temperature range of 3000-4000K for yellow light and 5000–6500K for white light. Compared with incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, and high-pressure sodium lamps, LEDs have significant advantages: They use low DC voltage; small power color LEDs usually have a forward voltage of 1.5V-2.8V, while high-power LEDs have a forward voltage of 3V-4V, all well less than safety voltage. They are energy-efficient; sodium lamps and metal halide lamps are gas discharge lamps that rely on heating to vaporize metals to emit light. In contrast, LEDs are solid-state light sources that emit light without heating, thus reducing energy consumption related to heating.
