Street Light Poles
are primarily made from hot-dip galvanized and cold-dip galvanized materials, with hot-dip galvanization being the commonly used method due to its corrosion and rust resistance. This is achieved through both galvanizing and powder coating processes to prevent the poles from rusting, with galvanization being the more significant of the two. Let’s briefly understand the purpose and importance of the galvanization process for street light poles.
Before galvanization, the street light poles must undergo a sulfuric acid rust removal process. The completely rust-free poles are then immersed in a hot galvanizing bath for a specific duration at a certain temperature to complete the hot-dip galvanization process. It is clear that rust removal is crucial because if the rust spots on the poles are not thoroughly eliminated, it doesn’t matter how well they are galvanized; the rust beneath the zinc layer will gradually corrode and eventually break through the galvanization. Rather than stating that galvanization is key, it is more accurate to say that rust removal is of utmost importance. Thus, it is understood that street light poles that have not undergone galvanization treatment are unusable.
Saying that such street light poles are unusable might be an exaggeration. If aesthetics are not a concern, it would not matter to directly spray paint on black poles. However, it is guaranteed that within a year, the poles will develop irregular paint peeling, which will become progressively worse, resulting in a patchwork of white, black, and yellow all over the poles. The reason is straightforward: ungalvanized poles contain both oil and rust. While the spray paint can obscure these issues, it does not eliminate them. Over time, the rust will naturally emerge; once the spray paint layer peels off, the rust spots will rapidly expand.
Identifying whether a spray-painted street light pole has been galvanized is quite simple. Find an inconspicuous spot and gently tap it with a dull object to remove the spray paint layer. If the underlying color is silver, there is no problem. If it is black, return it immediately; do not use it.
