Light decay, heat dissipation, and power supply issues are factors that hinder the development of LED street lights. If these problems are not addressed in a timely manner, they can affect the performance of LED street lights, leading to price drops and disrupting the market structure. Domestically, LED street lights are gradually replacing traditional street lights as the primary option for new installations. Moreover, the intelligent control features of LED street lights further enhance their advantages. In the current context of energy conservation and emission reduction, governments across various regions are widely promoting LED street light products.
Through our visits and surveys with clients, we have identified four main factors affecting the
service life of LED street lights.
Firstly, protection level failure: Many street light source chambers exhibit water droplets. Upon disassembly, it was found that due to prolonged outdoor use, the original sealing adhesive had turned yellow, aged, and lost its stickiness. This creates a breathing effect that allows moisture to enter the source chamber, forming water droplets. Additionally, the entry of moisture can cause SMD lamp bead solder pads to short circuit. A single source short circuit can lead to an open circuit in the entire string, resulting in some lamps being extinguished. The entry of harmful gases can cause surface polymer vulcanization and corrosion, causing cracks that may break gold wires, leading to lamp failure.
Secondly, insufficient heat dissipation: Investigations revealed that the majority of fixtures use inadequate heat sinks to save costs, leading to an unreasonable hot-to-cold ratio and insufficient thermal margin for the light source, causing the working temperature of the fixtures to be excessively high.
Thirdly, power supply issues: We found that most fixtures have their power supplies exposed outdoors without protection. When rain occurs, the sudden drop in temperature causes a breathing effect, leading to moisture entering the power supply and causing PCB short circuits, resulting in power failure. Moisture can also cause the potting compound to separate from the aluminum housing, reducing thermal conduction and increasing internal temperature. Furthermore, power supplies are often directly attached to heat sinks without consideration of the additional heat from the heat sink, leading to a scenario where every 10° increase in temperature results in a halved lifespan, while failure rates increase by 20%. This is due to the characteristics of electrolytic capacitors. Japanese electrolytic capacitors have a lifespan of 10,000 hours at 105°, and a 10° drop in temperature can double the lifespan, while a rise can halve it. The quality assurance certificates for Infineon power supply products specify temperature conditions as well since temperature significantly impacts power supply lifespan. Additionally, the aging of connecting wires can also affect lifespan, as plastic products exposed to UV light can undergo molecular chain rupture, leading to hardening, brittleness, and peeling of the surface insulating layer.
Fourthly, light decay: Testing a lamp used for three years showed that the illuminance on the ground was more than 40% lower than the initial value. There are many factors contributing to light decay. Firstly, the light source itself suffers from decay due to the attenuation of the light source chips. The data provided by chip manufacturers indicate that the maximum junction temperature rating for domestic chips is 125°, while imported chips are rated at 145°, ensuring that the chips can theoretically last up to 50,000 hours under rated junction temperatures.
