1. Wind Turbines
Wind turbines are facilities that convert natural wind into electrical energy, which is stored in batteries. They work in conjunction with solar panels to provide energy for street lights. The power of the wind turbines varies based on the power of the light source, generally available in 200W, 300W, 400W, and 600W. The output voltage may also vary, including 12V, 24V, and 36V, among others.
2. Solar Panels
Solar panels are the core component of solar street lights and represent a significant part of their value. Their function is to convert solar radiation into electrical energy, which is stored in batteries. Among various photovoltaic cells, monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar cells are common and practical options.
3. Solar Controllers
A high-performance charge and discharge controller is essential. To prolong the lifespan of the battery, it is necessary to limit the charging and discharging conditions to prevent overcharging and deep discharging. In areas with large temperature fluctuations, the controller should also have a temperature compensation feature. Additionally, the solar controller should include street light control functions, with light and time control capabilities, and should be able to automatically control the load at night to extend the operation time during cloudy or rainy days.
4. Batteries
Because the input energy of solar photovoltaic systems is highly unstable, battery systems are usually required for operation. Lead-acid batteries are commonly used. The selection of battery capacity generally follows these principles: first, it should meet nighttime lighting needs while maximizing the storage of energy produced by the solar panels during the day; it should also be able to store sufficient energy for continuous nights of cloudy or rainy weather. The power of the solar panels should exceed the power of the load by four times for the system to function properly. The voltage of the solar panel needs to be 20-30% higher than the operating voltage of the battery to ensure normal charging. The battery capacity should ideally be at least six times the daily consumption of the load. We recommend using gel batteries, as they have a longer lifespan and are more environmentally friendly.
5. Light Source
The type of light source used in solar street lights is a key indicator of whether the solar lighting can function properly. Generally, solar light fixtures use LED light sources.
LED light sources have a long lifespan, low working voltage, do not require inverters, and have high light efficiency, providing 50Lm/w domestically and 80Lm/w internationally. With advancements in technology, the performance of LEDs will continue to improve. Using LED as the light source for solar street lights is becoming a trend.
