The failures of LED lighting street light components mainly fall into the following categories. The first is transient over-current events. Transient over-current events refer to the current flowing through the LED exceeding the maximum rated current specified in the LED technical data sheet. This can occur due to direct high current generation or indirectly due to high voltage events, such as transient lightning strikes, transient switching noise from switching power supplies, and over-voltage events caused by grid fluctuations. These events are transient and of very short duration. Situations causing transient over-current events also include turning on outdoor street lights or temporary over-current during live plugging and unplugging.
The second is electrostatic discharge events. Electrostatic discharge damage is one of the most common transient over-voltage hazards in the manufacturing, transportation, and application of highly integrated semiconductor devices. LED street light systems must meet the IEC61000-4-2 standard for “human body electrostatic discharge mode” at 8kV contact discharge to prevent possible over-voltage failure in the event of electrostatic discharge.
