Photovoltaic Power Generation
System
is a way of power supply that uses the photoelectric effect to convert solar radiation energy into electrical energy. It is the mainstream of solar power generation today. Solar power generation directly converts light energy into electrical energy without a thermal process. It includes photovoltaic power generation, photochemical generation, photoinduction generation, and photo-biological generation.
Photovoltaic solar power generation requires converting direct current to alternating current through an inverter if the load is AC. In addition, the direct current output also simultaneously charges batteries. Due to voltage fluctuations at the load, a controller is needed to adjust the voltage. In electrical system terminology, this is referred to as “reverse power flow” or commonly known as “selling electricity.”
Conversely, for power companies, normal operation means supplying power to users, referred to as “forward power flow.”
The advantage of a grid-tied solar power system is that when solar power generation is insufficient during rainy weather or at night, electricity can be bought directly from the utility grid. Another important advantage of the system is that it can operate without batteries, reducing costs while enhancing the stability and reliability of power supply.
There are two methods of solar power generation: one is solar-thermal-electric conversion, and the other is solar-electric direct conversion.
The solar-thermal-electric conversion method generates electricity by utilizing heat energy produced from solar radiation. Typically, solar collectors convert the absorbed heat into steam, which drives a steam turbine for power generation. The first process is the solar-thermal conversion process; the latter is the thermal-electric conversion process, similar to conventional thermal power generation.
The solar-electric direct conversion method utilizes the photoelectric effect to directly convert solar radiation energy into electrical energy. The basic device for solar-electric conversion is the solar cell.
Photovoltaic solar cells are devices that convert solar energy into electrical energy due to the photovoltaic effect. They are semiconductor photovoltaic diodes; when solar light hits the photovoltaic diode, it converts solar energy into electrical energy, generating current. When multiple cells are connected in series or parallel, they can form a solar cell array with a significant output power.
With the continuous rising energy consumption globally and the environmental pollution caused by the abuse of fossil fuels, humanity must focus on ecological balance while responding to sustainable economic development. Human exploration and research into solar energy utilization will be more proactive, indicating that solar photovoltaic grid-connected generation will play an increasingly important role in future society.
