Generally, controllers are equipped with three indicator lights to represent the operational status of various components. Today, I am going to introduce how to diagnose faults using solar controllers.
1. Indicator Light Description
During the day, when the solar street light controller is under sunlight, the red charging indicator light will turn on (the method is flashing; the stronger the sunlight and the greater the charging current, the faster the flashing speed). The middle dual-color light represents battery capacity; when the light is red, it indicates deep discharge, yellow indicates undervoltage, and green indicates the battery is functioning normally. Another red light indicates the operational status of the LED: a solid light means the battery is discharging normally, while flashing indicates a fault.
2. Faults and Indicator Light Phenomena
1. During installation in the daytime, if the LED light source does not turn off (dual-color light is green; LED red light is functioning normally), it indicates a potential issue. We need to check if the wiring is correct because if the solar street light controller does not receive voltage from the solar panel, it defaults to keeping the LED in an operational state until the programmed working time ends, which may prevent it from functioning normally the next day. Therefore, we should verify if the connections between the controller and the solar panel are reversed. Another possible issue could be a direct short circuit in the solar panel.
2. If the solar street light does not turn on after some time of use (the dual-color light appears red), this indicates a deep discharge condition, and the LED light source will automatically turn off. The default state requires the battery’s voltage to recover to above the deep discharge protection voltage before the LED can function again.
3. At night, if the LED light source turns off after lighting for a period (the dual-color light appears yellow), it indicates undervoltage, usually occurring after extended periods of cloudy weather. In such cases, a method for maintenance is to disconnect the LED light source’s wiring and allow the solar panel to charge for a day or two, after which it should operate normally again. The solar controller automatically protects the battery during these conditions.
4. If the LED does not light at all (neither the dual-color light nor both red indicators are lit), we need to observe the controller’s indicator lights. If the controller is damaged, the indicator lights may not function correctly.
