The installation angle of solar panels is often a concern for clients. If the installation angle is unsuitable, the solar street lights’ ability to absorb sunlight will be weakened, thereby shortening their lifespan. So, what is the correct installation azimuth angle for solar panels? Here’s an explanation for you:
The azimuth angle of a solar array is the angle between the vertical plane of the array and the true south direction (east deviation is set as a negative angle, west deviation as a positive angle). Generally, when the array faces true south (which means the angle between the vertical plane of the array and true south is 0°), the solar panel generates the maximum electricity. If it deviates 30° from true south (for the northern hemisphere), the electricity generation decreases by about 10% to 15%. If it deviates 60° (for the northern hemisphere), the output will decrease by about 20% to 30%.
In general, for common solar yard lights, the azimuth angle of the solar panels is typically chosen to face true south to maximize the amount of electricity generated per unit of time. If there are restrictions due to the installation site, such as rooftops, slopes, hilly areas, building structures, and shadows, one should consider how to fully utilize the existing terrain and effective area while avoiding shadows caused by surrounding buildings, structures, or trees.
As long as the angle remains within ±20° of true south, it will not have a significant impact on electricity generation. If conditions allow, it’s better to tilt towards southwest within 20° to ensure that the solar peak generation occurs shortly after noon, which is beneficial for generating more electricity during winter. When the area for solar panels facing the true south is not large enough, they can also be positioned facing true east or west.
When using solar yard lights, customers should be encouraged to use high-quality copper wire. Due to conductivity, there will be some loss of current and voltage during output, which not only increases power consumption but in severe cases can lead to the failure of the LED driver power supply to operate normally.
